Milagros earrings

On a recent journey to Los Angeles I felt called to explore the historic Olvera Street district. As a child I was always surrounded with Frida Kahlo's artwork and memorabilia, and this shaped my concept of the world early on. The symbols that were meaningful to her, became meaningful to me. I decided to seek out milagros in particular: these sacred heart pieces that are so familiar to us, have recently become very important to me. I wanted to experience the traditional Mexican tin craft, and to take a close look at other artisan goods while I was so close to Mexico. 

Iconography has always fascinated me. I think they have a true human connection, since most of our communication is done through typography and images. The heart is one of the most ubiquitous and easily recognizable of these icons, a symbol of love and affection. 

I often contemplate the different kinds of love. There are languages with more words for it than my own native tongue, and this always made so much sense to me. The love of longing, passion, friendship, familial bonds: they all work so differently. A sacred heart seeks to ascend to the top of the column, to give us something to love that is higher than ourselves, higher than consciousness. This is for our own protection, and to remember that there is more to love than what exists on this physical plane.

These Milagros earrings are handmade in 14K yellow gold with pink faceted tourmalines bezel-set and weighing approximately .24ct total weight, and a post. Measuring 15mm across.
